MARTINA VERHAERT* (Morss) 20" E Re Ex VFr Sev 5 ½". People line up to have a closer look at this new
winner from Mort! Martina Verhaert is the lovely wife of the well-known Belgian
daylily connoisseur, Francois Verhaert. The flower is a perfect combination of two
¼" wide edges - - the outer one white, framing the inner one of dark, clear purple
with matching purple eyezone. The color between the eye and edge is a lovely, pastel
orchid. The throat is a clear, yellow to bright green and extends into center of the
eye. An early morning opener, the form is open face, with extremely wide,
overlapped petals and slightly rolled back sepals. The outer edges are ornately
sculpted in ruffles, piecrusting, tendrils, loops and pleats. The small-plants seem as
tough as piano wire and in perfect proportion to the low well-branched scapes that
display all blooms above the foliage. A fine parent, and though a reluctant pod
parent the pollen is very fertile. Supply limited. Junior Citation AHS, 1998
